Immaculate Reception

It's one of the most controversial plays in the history of the NFL. The Steelers were down late in a playoff game against the Raiders in December of 1972. Terry Bradshaw made a pass which was deflected and (likely) caught by Franco Harris. Harris ran the ball in for a touchdown. Much confusion and controversy ensued. Myron Cope, a Pittsburg sportscaster, dubbed the play the "Immaculate Reception" as a play on the "Immaculate Conception". If the ball only bounced off a Steeler receiver then Harris' catch would be illegal. Nobody can say for sure if it hit Fuqua (Steelers) or Tatum (Raiders) or both and in which order. Did the ball hit the ground before Harris caught it? Nobody has truly answered that either. The game also figured into another bit of NFL lore in that the winner of this game went on to play the undefeated Miami Dolphins the following week. Would the Raiders have beaten them? We'll never know.
