Howdy! My name is Drew Brees.

In the late 1990s some students at Purdue were required to take a class on the latest craze -- the World Wide Web. Drew Brees was one of them. Thanks to the Internet Wayback Machine we can still see the homepage he created. Click here to open the site.

Rants

One of my favorite aspects of sports is the post-game press conference rant. The most famous is Jim Mora's playoff rant. Someone asked Jim about the playoffs and he just went crazy like Dave Stoller's dad in Breaking Away when he was asked for a refund. Next we move on to Allen Iverson being asked about practice. He then goes on to say, "we're talking about practice" about 742 times. Then we see Dennis Green after absolutely blowing a game to the Bears remind us that, "they are who we thought they were." Well, he should have thought about not kicking to Devin Hester, the best punt returner I've ever seen play the game. Next we have Ditka responding to a heckler and some brilliant comedic timing. Then we finish up with Herm Edwards giving us some sage coaching wisdom: you play to win the game. Great stuff and lots of fun. Enjoy these.

Immaculate Reception

It's one of the most controversial plays in the history of the NFL. The Steelers were down late in a playoff game against the Raiders in December of 1972. Terry Bradshaw made a pass which was deflected and (likely) caught by Franco Harris. Harris ran the ball in for a touchdown. Much confusion and controversy ensued. Myron Cope, a Pittsburg sportscaster, dubbed the play the "Immaculate Reception" as a play on the "Immaculate Conception". If the ball only bounced off a Steeler receiver then Harris' catch would be illegal. Nobody can say for sure if it hit Fuqua (Steelers) or Tatum (Raiders) or both and in which order. Did the ball hit the ground before Harris caught it? Nobody has truly answered that either. The game also figured into another bit of NFL lore in that the winner of this game went on to play the undefeated Miami Dolphins the following week. Would the Raiders have beaten them? We'll never know.

Oh No!

The Cubs were playing the Brewers on September 23, 1998. They were battling for the wildcard spot in the National League at the time so every game was critical. The Cubbies had, at one point in this game, a 7-0 lead thanks to two Sammy Sosa dingers. Remember that this was also during the big steroids induced home run race between him and Mark McGwire.

The late Rod Beck had one out left to get in the ninth inning when Geoff Jenkins came to bat. The Cubs were leading 7-5 at the time. Jenkins hit a ball deep to left field which should have ended the game but Brant Brown dropped the ball. It was at this point when the ultimate homer, Ron Santo, screamed out, "Oh no!" The three base runners crossed the plate and the Cubs lost. The radio call that day would live on forever.

All was not lost however. The Cubs did end up tying for the wildcard spot that season, winning the tie breaking game before being trounced by the Braves in three straight games.

The Play -- 1982

On Saturday, November 20, 1982 Stanford played Cal in their annual rivalry game known simply as The Big Game. On the line for Stanford and John Elway was a bowl game berth. Stanford led with 8 seconds remaining. They decided to squib kick the ball to Cal. Cal lateraled the ball several times. Prior to the third lateral the Cal player appeared to be tackled and down. It was at this point that players and THE FULL MARCHING BAND entered the field of play. But they continued to lateral the ball and eventually Kevin Moen carried the ball through the band and into the endzone for what was ruled a touchdown. Should it have counted? It's questionable. Was it one of the most exciting plays in college football history? You bet. Let me know which college football game had a more exciting finish in the comments.
